You most certainly will not want to miss the First Annual Candy Cane Lane Children's Holiday Fashion Show and Luncheon benefiting the Children's Hospital at Scott & White on Wednesday, December 1.

The fashion show will feature some of our adorable students modeling holiday fashions from My Vintage Baby, Orient Expressed and original designs from Amanda Duggan, a mom of a CCS student!

Royal Volunteers Needed for Canterbury Faire

BAKE SALE
We are asking for everyone to donate one large item (such as a cake, pie, or bread) and one batch of small items individually wrapped (such as cookies, brownies, rice krispy treats).
• Label everything with tags or printed labels from your computer, be sure to mention if the item contains nuts. Don’t worry about pricing, we will handle that.
• Presentation is everything! Large items sell much faster if they look great. Check the dollar store for Fall or Halloween plates to display your creation.
• Individual items don’t need to be wrapped as fancy, most of these will be sold and eaten at lunchtime. These will be priced at 50 cents each, so package accordingly (one brownie per bag, two cookies per bag, etc.).
• Delivery times: Friday, October 22 before 4pm at the front of the school, or Saturday October 23 before 10am at our table by the Parish Hall.

CLASS BOOTHS
Sign up for a time to help at your classroom booth. Each class has a booth and parents need to sign up for 30 minute time slots. If you are unable to go into your child's class and sign up, send your teacher an email and let her know when you can help.

RAFFLE
Ready for a fall getaway? The Canterbury Faire committee is so excited to announce a raffle for a weekend getaway to Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine. It is a kid's dream and fun for parents, too! Tickets for the raffle are available in the office. Tickets are $10 per ticket or 3 tickets for $20.
A special thank you to our generous raffle sponsor Sherri and Graves Erskine, Geico Local Office serving the Killeen/Temple area.

Questions? Don't know what you can do to help? Contact Holly Steele, Canterbury Faire Chairperson. Thanks everyone for supporting this Parents Plus fundraiser!!

Christ Church School Sunday :: October 3

We hope you make plans to join all of us for Christ Church School Sunday this Sunday, October 3.

CCS is the primary ministry of Christ Church and the parishoners always appreciate seeing "their" students. At the 11 a.m. service the church will offer prayers for the school and will recognize the faculty, staff, school board, but most importantly our students. Upper School students will also sing.

Following we will have cake and fellowship in the Parish Hall. It is a lovely morning and we hope you will be there.

Students are encouraged to wear their Chapel uniforms.

Family Shields

Family Shields on display at Canterbury Faire 2009

Canterbury Faire is just around the corner (October 23!). We are asking each family to help with decorations by designing their own family coat of arms on the shield provided. During medieval battles, knights would put their family coat of arms on their shields so they could easily be identified as friend or foe on the battlefield. Have fun with it and make this a family project to do together with your children. If you still have your shield from last year, please send back so we can display the shields for others to view.

Shields will go home with students Friday. Keep in mind that this project is per family, not per student.

Please have the project completed and returned to school no later than Monday, October 18, so we can display them on the that week. On the day of the Faire they will be displayed outside on a castle wall to add to the medieval theme of the event.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Latin II :: Psalmus 23

Following is Psalm 23 in Latin. Since this is a long and somewhat difficult passage I am not requiring memorization but rather an ability to read the Psalm outloud with proper pronunciation.

Psalmus 23
Dominus pascit me, et nihil mihi deerit;
in pascuis virentibus me collocavit,
super aquas quietis eduxit me.
Animam meam refecit.
Deduxit me super semitas iustitiae propter nomen suum.
Nam et si ambulavero in Valle umbrae Mortis,
non timebo mala, quoniam Tu mecum es,
virga Tua et baculus Tuus,
ipsa me consolata sunt.
Parasti in conspectu meo mensam
adversus eos, qui tribulant me;
impinguasti in oleo caput meum,
et calix meus redundat.
Etenim benignitas et misericordia subsequentur me
omnibus diebus vitae meae,
et inhabitabo in Domo Domini
in longitudinem dierum.

We have been concentrating on new vocabulary words and further review of verbs and complex sentences. We even have a new class mantra: Debemus cogitare. We must think, or literally, we ought to think!

We are having really fun time expanding our knowledge and vocabulary and reading authentic Latin texts. Optime!

Latin I :: Pater Noster

We have been learning to recite the Lord's Prayer in Latin. I'm so proud of how well they did on the table blessing! I'm posting the Pater Noster just so students might have a copy at home to practice! We will have a memorization test in the next couple of weeks.

Pater Noster
Pater noster qui es in caelis
Sanctificetur nomen Tuum
Adveniat regnum Tuum
Fiat voluntas Tua
Sicut in Caelo et in terra
Panem nostrum cotidianum da nobis hodie
Et dimitte nobis debita nostra
Sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris
Et ne nos inducas in tentationem
Sed libera nos a malo. Amen.

We have also been learning new vocabulary and will have a vocabulary test before the end of the quarter. Vocabulary words will be posted tomorrow.

Science: Week of Sept 20

3rd grade has been studying the Skeletal System. By Friday, the students should know and be able to identify these bones: cranium, mandible, clavicle, scapula, humerus, radius, ulna, carpals, metacarpals, sternum, rib cage, spine, pelvis, femur, patella, tibia, fibula, tarsals, and metatarsals. We will also learn about the different kinds of joints in the body. "Elvira Bones" (a Michael's' resin reproduction) will be visiting with the class this week...along with a real lizard skeleton. This is shaping up to be a great week...no bones about it!

Latin II

Salvete! It's been a fun week. We've really been working hard on reviewing sentences and sentence structure. We reviewed the 2nd conjugation verbs (those ending in -ere).

We have begun to learn Psalm 23 in Latin. This is no small task! We will read a new line or two each class until we are able to read the entire 17 lines. See for yourself, this is not an easy passage to learn! I'm so proud!

Psalmus 23
Dominus pascit me, et nihil mihi deerit;
in pascuis virentibus me collocavit,
super aquas quietis eduxit me.
Animam meam refecit.
Deduxit me super semitas iustitiae propter nomen suum.
Nam et si ambulavero in Valle umbrae Mortis,
non timebo mala, quoniam Tu mecum es,
virga Tua et baculus Tuus,
ipsa me consolata sunt.
Parasti in conspectu meo mensam
adversus eos, qui tribulant me;
impinguasti in oleo caput meum,
et calix meus redundat.
Etenim benignitas et misericordia subsequentur me
omnibus diebus vitae meae,
et inhabitabo in Domo Domini
in longitudinem dierum.

And if all that wasn't enough we've added some new vocabulary words:
me--me, my, myself
quid--what
nihil--nothing
non--not
saepe--often
si--if
cogitare--to think, to consider
debere--to owe; ought, must
errare--to wander; to make a mistake
monere--to warn, to advise
servare--to save, to guard
terrere--to frighten, terrify
videre--to see

Latin I :: Review

We're off! This week in Latin we have begun memorizing a Table Blessing in Latin. Students are to be able to recite this short prayer in class by next Thursday, September 9. Have them practice any opportunity they can. They have been practicing before lunch at school! Once we get this one down, we will begin working on the Lord's Prayer.

Benedic, Domine nos (Bless us, O Lord)
et haec Tua dona (and these Thy gifts)
quae de Tua largitate (which from your bounty)
sumus sumpturi (we are about to receive)
Per Christum Dominum nostrum. (through Christ our Lord.)
Amen

We've also been discussing singular and plural in nouns and adjectives as well as agreement between nouns and adjectives. In Latin, the adjective follows the noun it is describing. For instance in English we would say the pretty girl but in Latin it is puella pulchra.

Vocabulary :: adjectives
alta--high
magna--large
parva--small
longa--long
pulchra--pretty
bona--good
nova--new

Salvete! Greetings!

We are off to a great start in Latin, learning several words and a little background about the ancient language of Latin. We talked about the importance of Latin as the root for Indo-European (Romance) languages. During our first meeting even the students put together similarities between Latin and Spanish. I know learning Latin will prove to be a valuable background for these students. Once they really grasp some of the basics of the language, they will flourish with Spanish and the English language too.

A few of the topics we will cover during this first year include:

Latin I
Pronounce, spell and translate Latin vocabulary
Learn practical Latin expressions and 2 prayers in full
Understand the concept of derivatives (words derived from Latin)
Learn basic grammar concepts (conjugating verbs, singular/plural, parts of speech)
Compete in a school-wide Latin Vocabulary Bee in the Spring

Latin II
Read and translate short stories from Latin Via Ovid and other original texts
Advanced grammar concepts (decline nouns, conjugate irregular verbs)
Vocabulary
Compete in a school-wide Latin Vocabulary Bee in the Spring

We will spend a good amount of time on grammar. Latin is a very grammar driven language with endings, conjugations, and noun declinsions.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time.

vale/valete         goodbye (sing/pl)
magistra/magister teacher (fem.masc)
discipula/discipulus student (f/m) disciple

Science:8/19 - 8/20

8/19: Today 3rd grade compared yeast and sand before and after adding warm water and sugar. We also discussed the 6 things all living things do: get energy, use energy, get rid of waste, reproduce, grow, and respond to change. The students made a "chain" to help them remember these things.

8/20: We will discuss bacteria and viruses...which one is living and which is not. We will also begin our discussion on the 5 kingdoms of living things.

Coming up: Fungus Kingdom, growing and documenting mold grown in a sealed container, and the Animal Kingdom...

Stay tuned...
